Other than better security, what advantage does linux have over windows.? I have Ubuntu 5.10 dual booted with windows xp on my computer. I got it because all the linux people are like "windows sucks get linux." From my experience so far I think windows is way better than linux. 1. No iTunes on Linux. 2. Less programs on Linux. 3. Impossible to install anything on linux if it isn't in synaptic. 4. I cant get DVD's to play even with VLC media player. 5. i cant get my wirelss keyboard and mouse to work. Could some linux person tell me advantages of Linux over windows because my experience has not been that good. Don't tell me no viruses(I never get any anyway) or that it is free. I want to know other advantages.
i need security/IT expert opinion pls. MULTIPLE questions. Malwares in bsd v, linux, macs, unix, windows? i need security/IT expert opinion pls. Malwares in bsd v, linux, macs, unix, windows Until now, just about how many malwares are there that infects bsd variants, linux variants, macs, unix, & windows ? i've heard windows has about 110-130,000 malwares linux has about 40 (some say about 300) is/are there any website(s) that counts/compares/malware threats and their numbers to computer OS ? Whats your opinions on the statement "Linux hard to be infected because very few people use it and the crackers don't want to waste time infecting a few computers. They want to infect the largest number they can, and, that means windows computers" . . . bcause i believe, technically, from the scratch, linux was built with better security than windows. Some say linux is built by hackers&crackers, so it's harder to infect linux. Also, some say, in hacker/cracker communities&competitions, windows is for exercise, while linux is used in the finals pls be objective&/technical, thanks a lot :)
Security problems with Linux? I am interested in getting linux/ubuntu version and double booting it with vista on my computer, and I remember briefly reading on the linux website about significant security flaws in the latest version. I am interested in programming (hobby/potential career) and have heard that Linux is great for said purpose. 1. What are these flaws? 2. is the security risk too great for me, an unexperienced Linux user? 3. What should I do to enhance security and prevent infection?

Linux OS security? compare linux to window, one major difference is that linux is safer, and like we don't have to worry about virus, spyware like we do in windows. But I have a question, if one website or some files/softwares contains spyware, virus, then you open the websites/files/softwares, you will probably be affected, isn't it also apply to linux or any OS? then, isn't it means antivirus and antispyware is also necessary for linux?
Question for all you Linux and Network Security people. Could you please recommend a replacement for MSN IM? Our office manager is having concerns over desktop security and wants to close out the big four, MSN, Yahoo, AOL, and ICQ. One of the other desktop technicians recommended Jabber, but I'm not familiar with it. What would you recommend for a very large company that covers two continents? It will have to be completely self contained and never have to leave the firewall except for updates. The client will have to run in a 99% Win XP Pro and 1% Vista environment. We don't have any objection setting up a Linux server. Management is unwilling to spend anything on it at this time, so freeware is best if possible.
A Security Suite For Linux (Ubuntu)? Okay, so I am thinking about switching from Windows to Linux, probably Ubuntu to be precise. Although people do say that you do not need an anti-virus protector for Linux, I know this much---Linux is not 100% safe from a hacker. So, can anyone recommend to me a reputable Security Suite that you pay for that would work for Ubuntu? Try to stay with the bigger names, not these off brands. Thank you for your time. Thank you guys for the great answers so far, one more thing I would like to know is this. If I do get a virus or something, will is spread to the Windows PCs connected to my Home Network?
Where can I find some free programs for Linux? I just started experimenting with Linux, and I like the way it works, I'd like to find some open source programs to use with it, time wasters are especially nice. I'd also like to find some open source security and anti virus software.
How do I become prepared for Linux? I've got a laptop that runs slower and slower with the amount of memory that windows requires with each upgrade and security update. I think it's time to switch, I use my laptop only for chatting and college work. I hear that you need to have technical knowledge before making a switch to Linux. Are there any programs available to help? Any books? I understand that Linux has an office program free similar to windows, but I have a program for college that helps me put everything in APA format, will that be possible with Linux? Or will I have to learn to do it myself :)?
linux live cd for extra security has anybody given any thought to that? I have been thinking on my next round of computers when all my HDs die this time I may just run live CDs. on all my boxes. I am running linux mint now with no problems but got to thinking how much more secure it would be done like this I can download to a flash drive when needed. it would save me the expense of new HDs has anyone given any thought to such a thing mine are all home use net browsing and such. I imagine security would be better this way also. any thoughts pros cons anything I may not be thinking about thanks guys probly DSL, linux mint and knoppix 3.3 are the OSs I am thinking on using for this purpose
How can I get started with Linux? I'm very excited to start using Linux, as it is claimed to be very stable and the best solution for internet security. I've never used Linux before. What would be the best way to get started? I want to try it out on one of my laptops. However, I will need to go back to Windows afterwards. I don't want to loose my Windows files and I don't want to reinstall Windows again. How can I accomplish all this? Thanks a lot. PS By the way, is Ubuntu OK to get started?
I have a Ubuntu Linux machine. How do I connect to a shared folder on a Windows XP machine on my network? The path to the shared folder on the network is: \\raymond1\mark at least from Windows. How do I connect to this from Ubuntu Linux, and where do I find it once I have connected? The shared folder has no password/security - any machine connected to my network can access it freely, so there's no complications with security. If you have any questions about my network, either machine, the shared folder etc. please message me before answering and I will do my best to provide you with the information you need to answer!
What is the best version of Linux in your opinion and why? im sick of windows vista ultimate i know security wise and speed wise the Linux operating system is the better choice but there are so many choices on which Linux OS you could have as your main OS i wanns know everyones opinion on what they think i should get and some good reasons to back up why i should get that version of linux
How do I connect Windows and Linux? I have two laptops behind the same router. Both connect to the internet just fine. One is Windows XP Media Center Edition and the other is Ubuntu 6.06. I'm used to using Windows file sharing to share files between Windows laptops. I want to do something similar now between the Windows and Linux laptop. I just care about reliability, speed, and convenience, not security. What are my options and how do I do it?
How do I set up my own web server using Ubuntu Linux? I'm sick of having to spend my hard earned cash on renting 60 gb of a hard drive on someone else's computer! I've got a server ready to have Ubuntu installed, but I don't know where to begin with setting it up as a web server What do I do? Is there any security software that I need? (Though I suppose that's a silly question because Linux is so secure anyway) I know that many ISP's don't like you uploading tonnes of data, but I never get all that much traffic anyway. If I do start getting lots of traffic, I'll change ISP!
